Hi all, have recently been taken off mx and leflunomide due to ast levels being too high. Have previously failed on sulphazalazine too. Just found out today I cango back on mx with a view to increasing the dosage until back on max (25 p week) as I was until end of last year. Im glad to be going back onto mx as joints, especially shoulder and hips are shouting at me! An added problem is that I cant take co-codamol any more as started suffering with migraines and my gp thinks this may be the onset of the menopause and co-codamol can be a contributory factor to migraines.

Question is, in all your experiences, whats next?? Are there any other dmards that can be offered?

Hope you are all ok

Cheers

Hi Heather

Sorry to hear the drugs are not working. Hopefully MTX will work again as you build up. I failed on Leflunomide, sulfasalazine and MTX. They decided not the try any other Dmards as my RA was too severe and apparently those 3 are the best. I was given high dose steroids to tick me along until I could start one of the new biologics. We chose Humira, which has been working really well. I've still managed to tolerate a very small dose of sulfasalzine - liquid form, so it's equivalently half a tablet, but it does seem to help my neck. The humira helps my wrists, elbows, shoulder and fingers!! Still have an unresolved problem with knee as endless injections and infusions haven't helped the swelling. Going back in Sept to see what is next for the knee!

In terms of pain relief, surprisingly regular paracetamol helps me, along with morphine - my GP gave me Oramorph which is really useful when the pain is really bad. Co-codamol made me feel very strange... and I couldn't sleep with it. The Morphine is really good and just deals with the pain, without giving me any other side effect. I don't use it too often as don't really want to get too hooked on it!

Hope you start feeling better.
